OCTOBER 3, 2013

Attendance:  70 members, 2 guests

Location:  St. Paul Lutheran Church

The meeting was called to order by President Don Muff at 9:30 a.m.  Opening ceremonies were led by Roger Andersen.  Members with birthdays in October were introduced.  Invocation was given by Craig Ause.   Muff recognized our club members who participated in this week’s “Freedom Flight for Veterans” who visited the Korean, Vietnam, and WWII memorials located on the Capitol’s grounds in DC.  They also visited Arlington National Cemetery

Don Muff presented Al Wagner a plaque for being honored as the recipient of the club’s Distinguished Service Award for this past year.   Al has served as the coordinator for the “kitchen and refreshment preparation” for our weekly meetings for a number of years.  Additionally, Al has been a dedicated member of the club by participating in many of our service activities, fund-raisers, and always giving a helping hand whenever asked.  Congratulations, Al.

Muff has set up the 2013-2014 committees a list of committees to all committee chairs.  There are still openings for additional members to serve on several of our committees.  Muff also indicated that the board approved a new “A/V committee” whose purpose will be to help with A/V equipment set and operation each week.

Gene Pollmann announced that sign-up sheets are available for our “fall roadside clean-up.”  It will be held next Thursday, October 10th, pending the completion of a gas line that is being installed in the roadside ditch.  Pollmann will check on the status.

Humor was provided by Lowell Richardson.

Jim Cornette announced that our program speaker for this week was to be Elizabeth Gildea, District Manager, Social Security Office, Ames.   Due to the government shut-down, she had to cancel.  The substitute program was five club members (Pete Peterson, Sandy Fleck, Glen Hilesland, Jim Penney, and Keith Peterson) who provided short autobiographies of the life experiences.  In addition, Hilesland talked about his trip to Washington DC this week as part of the “Freedom Flight” program.

Next week’s program:  “Prism, ISU’s Solar Car” by Dakota Morgan, ISU Mechanical Engineering Student.

The meeting was adjourned by Muff at 10:30 a.m.
