Ames Golden K Kiwanis held its inaugural charity golf tournament on Sept. 14, 2026 at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames with a shotgun start at 9am. Although it rained, the tournament was very successful, and we raised over $13,000 that will go to several charities that we support! Our club really stepped up to the plate as it was a joint effort of many.

AMES — The Golden K Kiwanis hosted their first-ever charity golf tournament at the Coldwater Golf Links Monday.
The tournament was put on by Kiwanis members Bob Larson and Thomas Baas, along with the development director of The Boys and Girls Club of Story County, Judge Johnston and Kiwanis President Jeff Witt.
The group’s goal was to raise money for 10 primary charities throughout the Story County area that work with children.
The 10 organizations that benefited from the tournament were Ames Northwood Preschool, the Ames Public Library, the Boys & Girls Club of Story County, ChildServe, Cyclone Country AKTION Club, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, St. Paul Lutheran Preschool, Raising Readers of Story County, The Community Academy and YSS Counseling.
Representatives from multiple nonprofit organizations attended the tournament to share their missions and learn more about the Kiwanis Club.
Raising Readers of Story County is a nonprofit group that recruits volunteers to assist children in different elementary schools with reading and literacy skills.
“We have free classes for children. Some of them are for children and adults,” Judy Dahlke, member of the board of directors, said. “The children all get free books for participating, and it takes a lot of money to do that. We provide thousands of books every year to children in Story County.”
Along with having representatives from companies that benefited from the tournament, companies that sponsored the event were also present. One of the sponsors was Northcrest Community, a retirement community in Ames that has been awarded Best Retirement Community for the past 12 years.
“We were invited to participate because of several residents that are a part of the Kiwanis,” Dawn Borwig, CEO of Northcrest Community, said. “They’re going to support a lot of charity organizations and as a nonprofit, we wanted to support that.”
The goal of the tournament was to raise money for 10 primary charities that the Kiwanis group supports, and a scholarship will also be established in the near future in memory of Golden K member Gene Pollmann.
Pollmann passed away in November at the age of 93 and was deeply involved in engineering, graduating from South Dakota State University with a degree in civil engineering before coming to Ames to work for the Department of Transportation.
The scholarship will be awarded to one high school student studying engineering, ideally in the next graduating year.
“He just passed away within this past year and we thought, ‘How do we honor him?’ Because he’s just been so good in our group,” Larson said.
