Ken Larson, 1931-2018

Kenneth Larson, age 86, of Ames, died at Green Hills Health Care Center, on February 21, 2018. A gathering of friends and family will be 4:00-6:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2018, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa 50010. A celebration of life memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. March 17, 2018 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 209 Colorado Ave, Ames, IA.
Kenneth Leroy Larson was born on April 7, 1931 on the Charter Oak farmstead, the middle of three boys. Ken attended country school for nine years as the only student in his class. He graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1949. While at Charter Oak, he played basketball and was recognized as an All State Honorable Mention Iowa Basketball Player. He attended Iowa Teacher’s college in Cedar Falls for one year with aspirations to become a high school coach. His second year of college, he transferred to Iowa State College (ISU) where he was in USAF-ROTC for four years graduating in May 1954. A member of Farm House, he was also the Senior Class President and member of Cardinal Key.
September 1954, he moved to Winter Haven, Florida, training on B-25 and T-29 aircraft. Following three years of service, stationed in San Angelo and Waco, Texas, Ken entered graduate college at the University of Wisconsin and was awarded a Crop Physiology PhD degree in 1961. Next, Ken moved his family to North Dakota State University as a professor in Agronomy for nine years.
Marrying Ruth in 1970, Ken relocated with Ruth and her children to University of Missouri for eight years as a professor/researcher and then five and a half years as Associate Dean of Agriculture. In 1984, Ken was sought to fill a similar position at Iowa State University returning to Ames as the Associate Dean of Agronomy. Prior to his retirement in 1996, he was a professor in Agronomy. While at the University of Missouri and Iowa State University, he was involved with twelve annual North Central Symposiums designed for the improvements of educational instruction. He was involved with various meetings for students, faculty and alumni. Ken’s research prior to retirement was on management and production on crambe.
From 1992-2007, Ken served as a consultant for the College Board, in New York City, providing descriptions of opportunities for high school students in agriculture and agronomy. When back at ISU, Ken served as advisor to Cardinal Key, Alpha Zeta, Sigma Alpha, Agronomy/club and Farm House. He took many students on Agriculture Travel Courses while at Missouri and ISU.
As active as his professional career was, Ken continued his passive of service in his retirement years. He was an active volunteer at Food at First, being called the “Meat Man”, Farm House, Kiwanis (Ames Noon and Golden K). Ken was involved with Kiwanis flipping pancakes and selling corn and apple earning the title “Mr. Sweet Corn”. Ken participated in many church activities during his life from washing dishes to preparing flowers. Ken enjoyed his farming roots with gardening, crop judging at Missouri and Iowa State Fairs, hobby of weed seed and soil texture samples kits for sale. He enjoyed sharing the bounty of the produce he grew throughout his life. He would be seen bringing fruits and vegetable to staff and residence of Green Hills while living there.
Ken was on the board of Heartland Senior Center and performed annually at the Variety shows. His favorite was Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First”. Ken was involved with ISU student activities, Alumni Associations and Department of Agronomy Activities. He planned several Reunions for Class of 56D USAF Pilots (2008) and ISU Class of 54 (2014). He enjoyed playing bridge with friends and wining at Bingo at Green Hills.
Ken loved his time with family, fishing, attending grandchildren events, trips with his brothers, and Hallinglags.
Ken is survived by his wife Ruth; daughters Linda Donaldson, Springfield Ohio, and Janet (Randy) Salzwedel, Fargo, North Dakota. Four Grandchildren: Christa (Dennis) Holman, Anthem, AZ, Eric Salzwedel, Fargo, North Dakota, Emily Donaldson (fiancé: Ken Brand), Lafayette, Indiana, Macgregor Donaldson, Pflugerville, Texas. One great grandchild: Parker Holman, Anthem, Arizona. Brothers: Don (Wilma) Larson, Omaha, Nebraska, and Lowell (Nancy) Larson, Sherman, Texas and nieces Kathy Kraft, Omaha, Nebraska, Bethany Larson, Storm Lake, Iowa and Rebecca Wright, Sherman, Texas and nephew Jim Larson, Omaha, Nebraska. Ruth’s children: Barb Radcliffe, Ames Iowa, Dave Radcliffe, Poughkeepsie, New York, Jay Day, Seattle, Washington. Ken was preceded in death by his parents: Paul and Frances Larson and nephew, Steve Larson.

Roger Andersen, 1932-2018
Roger Andersen, 85, passed away on April 15, 2018 in Ames. A gathering of friends and family will be 4-6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa. A celebration of life funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 20, at First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave, Ames, Iowa. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Roger was born in Shelby County, IA to Niels and Helga Andersen. He graduated from Storm Lake High School, earned a B.A. in Music Education from Buena Vista College, and an MME in Music Education from Drake University. He was also very proud of his status as a first-generation American.
Following college, Roger spent two years in the Army. He then began an instrumental music teaching career that took him to the Radcliffe, West Monona, and Ames Community schools.
Roger is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan, and his five children David (Marian) of Coralville, IA, Diane (Pat) Hawks of Anna, TX, Lisa (David) Chizek of Toledo, IA, Karen (Larry) Prescott of Bloomington, MN, and Kristin (Greg) White of Louisville, CO, 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Family, laughter, community, music, and travel were what Roger loved best. He was a member of many bands including the 3rd Armored Division Band, the Karl King Band, and the Heart of Iowa Senior Band, as well as a variety of others. Roger shared his love of music and had an impact on the lives of thousands of students over 38 years of teaching. Roger was loved by many and will be truly missed.

Stan Davidson Obituary
Stan Davidson, 1918-2018

Stanley Vetter Davidson was born August 12, 1918 in Sherman Township, Iowa to Rexford and Cornelia (Vetter) Davidson. He grew up on farms in Montgomery County, Iowa. After graduating from Wales-Lincoln School, he went to Iowa State College, joining the Adelante fraternity. In 1942 he graduated with a B.S. in Animal Science. He earned a M.S. in Vocational Education in 1952.
Helen Jane Peterson was born May 21, 1923 in Milwaukee, WI, to Ernest and Helen (Lantz) Peterson. She grew up in Marinette, WI.
They met while both were studying at ISC. After graduation Stan was a County Extension Agent in Southeast Iowa, and then enlisted in the Army Air Corps. They were married March 22, 1944, while Stan was on a short leave. He was soon co-piloting a B-17 Flying Fortress in the European theatre. He survived being shot down while flying over Germany and a German P.O.W. camp before returning home in 1945. After brief R&R, Stan took a County Extension Agent position in Sibley, IA. In 1947 he took a position in the Iowa State Extension office, and they returned to Ames. He worked for 40 years in Youth Extension and after retiring became the director of the 4-H Foundation. Helen worked for several years in the Graduate Student Office at Iowa State University. She was a long-time, active member of Collegiate Methodist Church, Chapter HN of P.E.O. for nearly 75 years, as well as book clubs, bridge clubs, and many other social groups. Stan was also a long-time, active member of the church and after retirement joined Kiwanis.
They are survived by their three children, Jean (John) Brayton, of Ames, Dick (Darla DeHaan) Davidson of Pella, and Bill (Rose) Davidson of Placitas, New Mexico; grandchildren, Heidi (Jonathan) Shook, Matt Davidson, Grant Davidson, Dirk (Courtney) Davidson, Martha (Andrew) Christofferson, and Julene (Thomas) Mortensen; great grandson, Nate Shook. Stan is also survived by a brother, Robert Davidson.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, (M.) Jean Pittman. Stan was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Frances, and four brothers, John Max, Carleton, John Eldon, and Richard.
Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, VA. Memorials may be made to Collegiate United Methodist Church, the Iowa 4-H Foundation, Northcrest Retirement Community, or your favorite charity.

Michael Durlam, age 84, of Ames, Iowa passed away at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on Saturday, November 24, 2018. A gathering of family and friends will be held 4-6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2018, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa. A celebration of life memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave, Ames, Iowa.
Mike was born in Jefferson, Iowa, on October 1, 1934, the son of Michael and Faye Durlam. He was raised in Jefferson, graduating from Jefferson High School. He attended American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines. He married Jo Ann Bullard on June 24, 1956, in Jefferson, Iowa. He served in the Iowa Air National Guard for 8 years, and also worked at Durlam & Durlam Clothing in Jefferson with his brother Loran. In 1964, Mike opened Durlam & Durlam Clothing in Ames and continued there until his retirement in 2000. Mike was very involved in the Ames Community. He was a prominent member of the Downtown Betterment Committee. He was an avid Cyclone fan and a Cyclone Ambassador, where he and Jo would host football players in a “home away from home” program. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church. Mike was also involved in Golden K Kiwanis. Above all else, he loved his wife and family as they were always number one in his eyes.
Mike is survived by his wife Jo; his daughters Ann (Richard) Sandve; and Sara (Bruce) Westemeyer; grandchildren Erica (Andrew) Tinius and their son Xavier; Nate Sandve, Ryan Westemeyer, and Ross Westemeyer; a brother Wendell Durlam; two sisters Lois Veach and Mary Lynch; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.
